How big should a pump track be?

Generally speaking, the minimum amount of space required to build a backyard pumptrack is 6 m. x 6 m. Lee also reminds us that there is a sweet spot to pumptrack design: you want enough space, but don’t want the track to be too big either.

Pump tracks are great tools for mountain bikers looking to sharpen their skills, build fitness, and have a good time. A pump track is a continuous dirt loop made up of rollers and bermed corners. Tracks can be basic ovals (like mine) or more complex with multiple turns and straights.

Where was the first pump track invented?

One of the first (if not the first) pump tracks in the US was located at the Fix Bike Shop in Boulder, Colorado. However, it’s widely recognized that Lee McCormack of LeeLikesBikes.com and his publication, Welcome to Pump Track Nation had a major influence in kicking off the pump track movement in the US as we all know it.

Having a broom, rake and flat head shovel as well as a source of water on hand is needed at a bare minimum to maintain a track and keep it running. This pump track at Woodward Park in Fresno was in dire need of maintenance, but local bike advocates were restricted from performing it.
