Can you work under 16 with a National Insurance number?

Until children reach the mandatory school-leaving age (MSLA) – that is the last Friday in June in the academic year of their 16th birthday – they can only work a certain number of hours and do certain jobs. After that, they can apply for their national insurance number and work full time.

Is it illegal to work without a National Insurance number?

All employees should have a National Insurance Number (NINO) & give it to their employer although it is not a legal requirement to obtain work without one. The NINO ensures the National Insurance Contributions and Tax are recorded against the correct named employee when submitted to HMRC.

Should I put my NI number on my CV?

NATIONAL INSURANCE NUMBERS: Do not ever, ever, ever put your National Insurance number on your CV! Together with your name, address, date of birth and employment information you are leaving yourself open to significant identity fraud.

Can you pay someone without an NI number?

The (very) short answer is yes. You must obtain a National Insurance number if one is available. If the employee doesn’t have one, they must register for one as soon as possible. You can pay them and file your Real Time Information (RTI) submissions without the NI number, since it isn’t an HMRC technical requirement.

Can I work while waiting for my NI number?

Yes, you can start work straightaway. There is no legal requirement for you to have an NI number to work. Life here will be easier with an NI number so we’d recommend it. Your employer can still pay your NI deductions (which is a legal requirement) but they do not need a number for you to do so.

Can you work without National Insurance?

Can I still start work without a National Insurance number? Yes. We have heard that some employers are advising that they cannot employ individuals or pay them until they have a National Insurance number. This is not correct.
